Letter to the Editor
Choosing glass gift duty of senior gift committee

On behalf of the 2002 Senior Class Committee, I feel compelled to respond to Thomas Day's column printed on Sept. 28.

Day is correct that the Class of 2002 has a unique opportunity to make our mark on this campus and at the same time honor the victims of the attacks of Sept. 11.

While his intentions are laudable, I hope to clarify some things mentioned in the article.

Day's column indicated that there are no memorials at Penn State honoring the victims of foreign wars.

In fact, there are a series of plaques in Old Main dedicated to those who died in both world wars.

The frescos themselves were dedicated in memory of those who died in WWII.

A Senior Class Gift ballot selection committee, consisting of faculty, staff, and student representatives from across the university, carefully selects the ballot from proposals submitted through the beginning of September. Although the Senior Class Gift is not a subset of USG, a representative from USG is part of this process.

The Senior Class Gift Committee agrees with Day's recommendation for a lasting memorial.

This year, in true democratic fashion, the senior class will have the opportunity to vote on not only our gift but also whether to dedicate the gift to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

We encourage all seniors to participate in voting week, which will be the week of Oct. 22.

I encourage anyone with questions or concerns regarding the class gift to e-mail me at ejs207@psu.edu.
