Objectivist leader's view not backed up

"Other state sponsors of terrorism, such as Iran and Iraq, should also be attacked during this war against terrorism," appeared in "Students React to Retaliation" in the Oct. 10 Collegian.

In response to this comment by Rick Smith, treasurer of the Objectivist Club, in the Collegian, I must say I'm both surprised and baffled that he would make such a comment.

This is not meant to be a personal attack on Smith himself, as I am leaving room for the possibility of his comment being misquoted or taken out of context, but simply my reaction to what seems to be a slight bit of contradiction coming from the representation of the Objectivist Club.

I was under the impression that the organization supported the philosophy of treating a situation or idea without distortion by personal feelings or prejudices, which is the dictionary definition of the word "objectivism."

At the same time I believe that people should be able to express their opinions so long as they justify them, which Smith did not do.

I believe Smith's comment is missing its defense, whether intentionally left out or not.
