CATA must address scheduling hassles

As many State College residents have found since the beginning of this semester, Centre Area Transportation Authority buses are operating a little differently than in the past.

Students living on Vairo Boulevard especially were having problems relying on the Centre Area Transportation Authority to get them to and from campus, with traffic and construction being part of the problems.

But CATA also stopped running as many buses to that area and though the company said it would adjust the schedule after the problems that occurred in the first two weeks of school, when many students were watching the full buses pass them. As a result, many students weren't making it to classes or other obligations on time.

The problems continue, however, even this far into the semester. Students are still having difficulty finding buses that can take them and many are finding that they must rely on their own legs to get them to campus — even from places as far as Vairo Blvd.

And CATA is having other issues with transportation as well. Many State College residents are having a difficult time getting from place to place on the buses over the weekends when there are football games in town.

These delays make travel to and from town difficult for many area residents.

CATA officials say the shuttles that run to and from the stadium that day don't affect the number of buses running. Traffic is what keeps them from coming at their regular intervals.

In all of these situations it seems that CATA must start to re-evaluate the way their buses operate. Traffic issues may be the reason that so many people are having difficulty relying on the ride, but for those who pay so money for bus passes, the inconvenience is deplorable.
