White Building adds more gym machines

Penn State has added more machines to the MBNA Student Recreation Center in the White Building. When students returned from fall break, they discovered extra treadmills and elliptical fitness cross-trainers in the cardiovascular room.

White Building officials would not comment on the number of new machines, but students have already begun to notice the difference it has made in wait time. "It's so much better. You don't have to wait as long. There's more options; it's not as annoying as before," said Jess Salinger (junior-international communications).

The university will be releasing a statement giving further details on these additions, White Building officials said.

In February, Vice President of Student Affairs Bill Asbury said the university was not using all the available space in the White Building.

Penn State originally planned to use 15,000 square feet for equipment, but cut it down to 5,000 square feet.

After announcing the opening of the student recreation center, a number of local businessmen voiced concerns to Penn State about how the new addition to the university fitness system would take away business from their gyms, Asbury said.

In a previous interview, Asbury said the university would wait to add more equipment until it assessed the demand for the use of the building.
