Welsh stuns Michigan with four goals

Record after record after record.

The Penn State women's soccer team was busy last weekend breaking records all over Jeffrey Field in its wins against Big Ten rivals Michigan State (4-4-2) and Michigan (6-5).

For Penn State junior Christie Welsh, tying the Big Ten and school record in scoring with 58 goals against Michigan on Sunday was probably one of the best ways she could have imagined spending her fall break.

In the Lions 6-2 victory over the Wolverines, Welsh also set school records for goals in a game (four), shots in a game (12), and points in a game (10).

The four goals helped Welsh tie former Penn State player and four-time All American Rachel Hoffman. This leaves Welsh only two points shy of tying Hoffman for most career points with 147.

Welsh scored the first goal for the Lions 33:10 into the game off a left-side flick from sophomore Heidi Drummond. Almost exactly a minute later, Welsh added Penn State's second goal of the day assisted by senior Bonnie Young.

But Michigan would not be shut down.

Not even a minute after the Nittany Lions' second goal, Wolverine Abby Crumpton added an unassisted tally to the board.

Although Penn State out-shot Michigan 21-5, the Lions were only able to capitalize four more times in the second half. At the 52:42 mark, Stephanie Smith converted a high kick to put the Lions up 3-1. Welsh answered with her third goal of the day, not even a minute later.

But again, the scoring battle continued, as Michigan's Michele Pesiri scored 17 seconds later, making the score 4-2.

Drummond scored Penn State's fifth goal of the day off an assist from Welsh.

Welsh then took the ball one more time down the field for Penn State on a breakaway, scoring her fourth and Penn State's final goal of the day. The hat trick was Welsh's second for the season and seventh of her career.

"We weren't trying to go for it," Penn State coach Paula Wilkins said about Welsh's record setting goals last weekend. "We thought Michigan would come in here all fired up after Friday's win at Ohio State. When they scored their first goal, I thought we'd be in a dog fight."

The record setting for the weekend didn't stop there.

A crowd of 1,270 packed Jeffrey Field breaking the previous record of 1,257 set against No. 4 and defending national champion Florida on Sept. 17, 1999, to watch the Nittany Lions net their second shutout of the year in the 4-0 victory over the Spartans on Friday.

The day started off fast as Smith notched the first goal off an assist from Joanna Lohman only 4:35 into the game. Young was quick to add to that total scoring the team's second goal of the day only three minutes later off a free kick.

But the Lions would not stop there.

With three minutes remaining in the half, Welsh added one more for the team off an assist from Lohman making the score 3-0 at the half.

Although out-shooting Michigan State 17-1, the Spartans were able to hold Penn State to one goal in the second half of play. It came at the 66:37 mark as Drummond converted a left side pass from Smith.

The win increased Penn State's home game record to 4-0, and the Lions' overall record to 8-2-1, (4-0-1, Big Ten).

"I'm happy with the quick start at home," Wilkins said in a press release after the game. "Michigan State did a good job. I'm very happy with the result and very excited with the crowd support."

The Lions won't have the crowd support this week, however. Their next two contests are away at Iowa on Friday and Illinois on Sunday.
