Letter to the Editor
Males must look past weight in choosing date

I have yet to see any one on campus wearing these controversial shirts, but I felt the need to respond to Colin Murphy's letter about shirts with the message "Freshmen girls — get them while they are skinny."

Mr. Murphy says "This shirt is just a funny take on it (the freshman fifteen)." He's failing to mention, or perhaps he just didn't realize, that males wear these shirts to profess their belief that freshmen are only worth pursuing before they gain any weight.

Unfortunately, this is a sad stand to take.

It's a shame that some students at Penn State care only about the superficial characteristics of the opposite sex and by this I mean body type.

Who cares if someone has a great body — if this person doesn't have the brain cells to carry on an engaging conversation, I wouldn't be the least bit interested in him.

I would hope that most males would be looking for the important things in a date (brains and not bodies), and I'm sure that many do, but the wearers of this shirt obviously have it a little backwards.

Until some men realize what the important things in a woman are, we will have immature people caring only about how well a girl looks from behind and not about what is in her head.

I fear trouble lies ahead for those interested in beautiful (and not brainy) women. A body sags, but the brain doesn't.
