The sports world is at a standstill, and Penn State is feeling the effects.

The Nittany Lions football game versus Virginia tomorrow night has been postponed and no make-up date has been announced.

Penn State Assistant Athletic Director for Communications Jeff Nelson said the two schools will hold conversations tonight to discuss a make-up time and date. Nelson said in a press release that a decision is expected within 24 hours.

"Penn State and Virginia officials have been in contact throughout today and will continue discussions on the possibility of re-scheduling the game at a later date," Nelson said in the press release.

But the Penn State football team wasn't the only squad effected by the events in New York City and Washington, D.C. yesterday.

Among those left stranded away from home when all domestic flights were canceled yesterday morning, were members of the Penn State women's golf team.

At press time, members of the team were en route to State College by way of a rental van, said assistant women's golf coach Emily Marron.

The team missed its Monday night flight out of Lincoln, Neb., after finishing late at the Chip-N Club Invitational Tournament at the University of Nebraska, said Marron.

Penn State women's golf coach Denise St. Pierre and her team made alternate flight arrangements yesterday morning, but the tragedies in New York and Washington and the consequential flight cancellations kept the Nittany Lions on the ground.

"They caught a flight from Nebraska to Kansas City, and decided from that point to drive back," Marron said.

Tournament play had been suspended Sunday due to the cover of darkness, so Penn State and the 12 other competing schools finished the first of their two rounds early Monday morning, then teed off at 8 a.m. in a shotgun start format to complete the second round.

The Lions finished second as a team, posting a combined score of 907, their third-best ever. Junior Katie Futcher shot a 2-under-par 70 during Monday's round.

In spite of being immobilized, the team was in no danger, said Marron.

"They're all safe," Marron said. "They're fine."

Of the Penn State teams that were competing away this weekend, the women's golf team was the only one that had not returned home as of yesterday.

Other Penn State teams have canceled upcoming competitions. The women's volleyball team's home match against Youngstown State last night was canceled.

At press time, the field hockey team's game today at St. Joe's was still scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
