Penn State football has always been a source of integrity and great pride with its plain blue team buses, plain black shoes, and plain uniforms with no names on. All that is done so that no one person will stand out above the rest, and we would just be the Penn State. In the stadium we were all one group. One class, all Penn State faithful.
Additions and modifications to the stadium were needed. Improved restrooms, concessions, team locker rooms, media rooms, and public spaces were needed and were good improvements. Increasing the seating capacity with new seating areas was also a great idea.
The way in which these improvements were done makes me fear we have gone too far and created class distinction between our fans, which I don't think was intended.
I used to always feel equal to anyone else in the stadium until now. The skyboxes and club seats with their escalators, elevators, and separate dining facilities definitely separates me from them.
I sat in the stands during the Miami game, watching "commercials" on the jumbotron instead of hearing the fantastic Blue Band play songs to rouse the crowd. I thought that as beautiful as this stadium is, it is no longer a university stadium. I feel we have lost track of the students, studies and glory of college athletics.
I'll probably be spending more time watching the Lions on television and not in a stadium. That leaves me feeling alienated.
