Free speech must apply to offensive word usage

Hypocrisy has once again reared its ugly face in Penn State. One might ask which act of blatant hypocrisy I am referring to. It is that of the flier passed out by Julian Heicklen on Tuesday. Granted that he used horrible judgment in using the word in the flier, which he consequently doomed himself to political suicide. Yet I wondered of the whereabouts of the defenders of free speech whom vehemently defended Womyn's Concerns and its co-sponsors' use of the word "Cuntfest".

Cunt is the equivalent term in the degradation of women as the word nigger is to the degradation of African-Americans. Needless to say, quite a number of women, including myself, were offended by the word "Cuntfest". It humiliates and demeans women. But did offended parties receive an official apology from Womyn's Concern for their "malicious, insensitive, and very offensive" actions. Of course not, because they were protected under this apparently biased shield called the First Amendment. Heicklen and the Libertarian Party do not have to answer or apologize to anyone even if they resorted to use a word as disgusting and vulgar as they did to voice their opinion. However, their opinion, no matter its unpopularity, is still protected under the First Amendment.

Dr. Spanier, please open your eyes to the truth of the matter: You cannot castigate one party for its ideas and opinions while others are allowed an open forum to voice their opinions. It would be the epitome of hypocrisy.
