USG appoints cabinet positions

Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Government Senate filled two executive cabinet positions last night.

Michael Fedor (senior-secondary education) was officially approved as chief of staff, a position he has unofficially held since the resignation of Terry Burke last summer.

USG President Justin Zartman appointed Fedor, who was a town senator in last year's Senate, after Burke left to pursue other projects.

Conor Moran (senior-political science) was confirmed as director of Town Affairs. The committee serves as a connection between students and the State College Borough Council. Zartman nominated Moran in the spring, but later withdrew the nomination before nominating him again over the summer.

Town Sen. Jason Covener questioned Moran on his own vision for the committee. When Moran was being interviewed for the position originally, it was suggested that he would just follow directives given by Zartman and not formulate his own ideas, an idea Moran disputed last night.

"I have a commitment to Justin," Moran said. "I also have a commitment to you."

The possibility that the State College Borough Council may close off apartment balconies or install cameras downtown was discussed at several points last night.

With that prospect in mind, Moran said his most important project as director of Town Affairs will be to have more student representation in discussion about issues that affect them in the borough.

The Senate also passed the 2001-2002 budget for Academic Assembly, the other body that comprises the USG legislative branch. Academic Assembly is allocated a budget from the Senate, and was given $897.70 for expenses varying from programming to advertising.
