Hooters encourages assaults, harassment

I never cease to be amazed by the Collegian's irresponsibility and blatant disregard for the well being of Penn State students.

In the wake of yet another stream of sexual assaults, the Collegian published a front-page article, complete with picture, lauding the virtues of the restaurant Hooters.

The creation of a misogynistic restaurant in State College receiving front-page attention and being "welcomed" by students demolishes much hope of envisioning a campus community free of rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment.

This restaurant chain makes its money from the sale of women's bodies.

This makes women's bodies seem like objects that can be bought and owned. Thus, the general public is not outraged by violent assaults on women because these attacks are somehow justified in the cultural climate.

That such a restaurant is considered a "positive addition to the Penn State atmosphere" or that it is considered a place for "boys looking to bond" indicates a lack of respect for women as human beings.

And it is this attitude that unfortunately appears to permeate the Penn State community.
