Letter to the Editor
Sex crimes are actions of individuals, not men

I know this will probably be passed off as me being a whiny man, with no right to complain because of the years of oppression that I am somehow responsible for; but it is unfair of Pinsker to blame men as the sole fault bearers in this tragic situation.

It may be true that 86 percent of rapists are acquaintances of the victim. However, it is also true that the majority of men are not rapists. And I personally find it hard to believe that a few classes or a speech by the dean will be able to change the nature of a few sick individuals.

Even if some words could temper the heart of these savage beasts, I doubt those words would be recalled in a drunken stupor.

Second, I doubt that it was the Collegian's intention to offend Pinsker, by simply quoting the advice of the police.

I am not saying that any fault lies within the women who were assaulted, far from it.

I am, however, saying that it was good advice on the police's part. All people should lock their doors — not to limit freedoms nor to place the blame of crime on the part of the victim. The doors have locks for a reason: to prevent crime, whether that be assault or burglary.

When I lock my door, I am not taking responsibility for a would-be burglar's actions; I am protecting my investment.

Third, I know rape is wrong.

I, like most other men on campus, do not need to be told this, even though I was at freshman orientation.

Stop blaming men as a whole for an individual's crime.
