Letter to the Editor
Vehicles, not bicycles unwelcome on campus

I was outraged by the Aug. 21 letter to the editor recommending that bike paths be removed from the roads on campus.

In my mind this is not the most "efficient" solution. Bicycles are a safe, environmentally friendly method of transportation that I believe more people should make use of.

In fact, more people should take advantage of the physical benefits of simply biking to, from, and around campus rather than waiting on the endless lines at the gyms!Bike paths generally take up very little space and allow bikers to ride in a lane that is slightly safer than along the general roadway.

I'm sorry for the man who was clipped by the bicyclist as he was getting out of a car, however one incident should not be used to make all cyclists appear to be oblivious to their surroundings.

In fact, I believe more cyclists are hit by drivers that are not paying attention than pedestrians hit by cyclists not doing so.

It has been my experience that cyclists pay the most attention since they move faster than pedestrians and are, therefore, at a higher risk of being hit by drivers who do not see them.

Maybe the solution is not to take away bicycle traffic from campus, but to take away (or severely limit) car traffic.

This would clear the roads immensely and allow people ,and cyclists, to move more freely and safely around campus.
