It is disturbing to see all the trash and refuse generated by the return of Penn State Students to the community each year.
I generally have a high opinion of the intelligence and the personalities of most PSU students, but the reprehensible annual practice of Fall-move-in/Fall trash-move-out is too much to bear.
My advice to the intelligent students and other members of the Penn State community: Don't move into a new place and begin immediately throwing old furniture, appliances, and unwanted possessions into the garbage pile.
Take furniture and goods to the local Goodwill on S. Allen Street, or find a friend who will mistake your garbage for a generous 'gift'.
And if appliances (such as televisions, refrigerators, or stoves) are beyond repair, take them to the Transfer Station, 253 Transfer Road, across from the Nitany Mall, for proper recycling.
The number of interested students should call to inquire about donating, or if they have any other questions is 238-7005.
Simply leaving that stuff out for the garbage truck is a direct danger to the environment.
Those old appliances may contain hazardous chemicals or other components that will prove dangerous to the local environment.
Although cardboard boxes are, and have been, easily recyclable, it's obvious that most students at PSU don't take the time.
Please, take cardboard moving boxes to a public cardboard dumpster for recycling it's your responsibility as a member of the State College community.
Here are a few of the most convenient cardboard recycling dumpsters that can be found throughout the State College area, both close to campus and in locations farther from Penn State:
Burrowes St. behind Wendy's
Calder Way behind McClanahan's
Calder Way between Heister and Garner
Cresson Alley 300 West Calder
E. Beaver Avenue at CVS
Fraser Street Parking Garage
Hamilton Square Plasa
Heister Street behind the cinemas
Highland Alley behind Goodwill
Humes Alley behind Chile's
Nitany Bev,North Patterson Street
Ruby Tuesday's S. Atherton Street
Westerly Parkway Plasa behind Heilig Furnature
Ramada Inn, S. Atherton Street.
Take the time to prove you're more intelligent than a clueless freshman recycle cardboard boxes and unneeded appliances.
After all, you're a college student, which means more than getting schwilled at Players.
I think.
