Letter to the Editor
All students deserve welcome to Penn State

Several strong messages were written in the editorial section of the Collegian yesterday about racial diversity. Some of the messages mean a great deal to our campus's welfare while others may invoke separatism to another level.

I agree wholeheartedly with several aspects of the article including: "create a warm, welcoming environment to students entering what many may perceive as a hostile place," "to show the nation that Penn State is not the hate-filled institution many outsiders mistakenly perceive," and "one does not need to wait for an organized rally to promote racial understanding."

All of these ideals contribute to the campus' ethnic awareness and are well spoken comments on what the community can do to create a more welcoming environment.

On the other hand, it makes me feel as though I'm the culprit of the hate mails last semester and that the finger is pointed at me, a male Caucasian student.

And in this sense, I have to single out the minority freshmen and treat them with more warmth and more respect than everyone else.

I treat every single student with the same respect and admiration as I expect from them.

The hate mail from last semester was, most-likely, from one student on this campus.

I feel awful inside when I think about those death-threats sent last semester, seeing as I personally knew one of the female victims.

She shared with me that she felt terrified even walking the sidewalks of Penn State, which I could not even comprehend.

I feel terrible when someone as loving and caring as she is has to watch her back everywhere she goes.

I have been very hesitant writing this letter because of my status and my inclination towards growing together as a whole rather than separating myself from others.

I feel better when I think of the strength, cohesion and general support from the rally last semester that a friend and I attended.

I cannot help the actions of singular, ignorant persons, but I will do my best to respect not only other students as human beings, but everyone around me as well.

Please attend the "Justice Now More Than Ever" celebration.

If you can't afford it, wait outside to see everyone's reactions when they walk out the door and share the warmth of one cohesive, strong and supporting student body.
