"Next to home . . . this is the place to eat meatloaf."
This sentence is the first thing students see as they enter Baby's Burgers & Shakes, 131 S. Garner St. The message provides peace of mind even though you may be far from home, you can still enjoy the next best thing.
Baby's has been a part of State College since 1987 and has worked its way into the hearts of many students who enjoy the casual atmosphere, including waiters and waitresses in '50s attire, along with jukeboxes at every table. For just a quarter you can play a song of your choice, such as something from Tommy James and the Shondells, the Drifters or Elvis Presley. Most of the waiters and cooks are students, which adds to the fun, laid-back atmosphere.
Conveniently located only a block from campus behind McLanahan's Student Store, 414 E. College Ave., students can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at very reasonable prices. A typical meal could cost between $5 and $10, depending on the time of day and what is ordered. The service is quick and friendly, and diners are given their choice of smoking or nonsmoking seating, and also a table or the counter.
Baby's definitely has the best milkshakes in State College, but if you're lactose intolerant or on a diet, watch out because they're made from 100% pure milk. They're available in many different flavors including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cherry, coffee, mocha, and peanut butter, all of which are delicious and filling.
Aside from milkshakes, Baby's offers fried chicken, mini-burgers called "whimpys," and even salad or macaroni and cheese for any vegetarians. Whatever you choose, it's guaranteed to be satisfying and brought out quickly.
According to a waitress, the reasoning behind the '50s diner theme is to create an all-American dining experience. The '50s were chosen because that was a decade where many people were proud to show their patriotism.
One interesting thing students may notice is that Coke products are served and Coke logos are seen frequently around the dining area, which is a little strange considering that Pepsi is typically seen around Penn State. The logic around this is that Coke was more prominent in the '50s and sticking with the theme of being all-American, Coke was chosen to supply the beverages for the soda jerks.
Baby's accepts credit cards or cash. The hours are Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to midnight.
Students are encouraged to enjoy the fun atmosphere; however, don't dawdle too long considering the advice written on the wall: "Eat and get out!"
