Caucus hindering, not helping, their cause
The recent issues of multiculturalism and diversity as made prominent by "The Village" and Black Caucus here at Penn State has seemingly been about fighting for the rights of minorities. These groups have unfortunately forgotten the most critical minority of all: The minority of the individual. This is a minority that, instead of defending supporters of multiculturalism, fights vehemently against. Judgment of a person's merits has ceased to be about individual values and achievements, instead becoming judgment based on the collective value of a race. The Black Caucus would supposedly like to see a place where all are treated equally, but how can that ever be achieved if Black Caucus constantly reinforces the race labels they are fighting against? The very existence of a Black Caucus works against their claimed goal of eliminating racism because it creates the idea that all blacks are the same and cannot possibly be successful on their own. They must therefore rely on the collective group to obtain special advantages for them else they cannot succeed. People of all races should be judged on their individual merits, not associated with a collective mentality that views an intelligent scholar as having the same value as a worthless bum just because they are the same skin color. To ever really begin the fight to end racism, first end the discrimination against the minority of individual value and merit. Once individualism is no longer scorned, all other problems will have already been solved.
