Letter to the Editor
Disturbing unity rally and march planned by university ineffective, unproductive for Black Caucus: Letter 4

I have a question: What went on at Old Main on Tuesday? I heard a lot of shouting, a lot of criticism of administrators, and a lot of angry Black Caucus members. But what I didn't hear from the steps was anything of substance. Nothing was accomplished.

A march for unity planned by administrators was protested because the Black Caucus wasn't consulted. I showed up at Old Main expecting to head to the streets to voice my support for racial equality. But instead, I was unknowingly thrust into a personal tiff between the Black Caucus and Graham Spanier.

The Black Caucus took this one step too far. The protest at Saturday's football game was outstanding, and I admire the courage of those who participated. But the actions of certain students to interrupt a march for unity resulted in anything but unity. It was simply childish.

It seems they may have a right to be angry at the university, as reports say racial tension is worse than has been officially reported. But the rally on Tuesday did nothing but hurt the Black Caucus' image and turn away supporters they desperately need.
