Weekend 'Walk for Children' to help Safety Net Program

For the Collegian

This weekend's "Walk for Children" will not be just another walk in the park.

The Child Development and Family Council of State College is holding the first annual walk tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg.

This event will benefit children, youth, families and the programs and people who provide care and education. The proceeds go to CDFC's Safety Net Program for Children and Youth and a Resource Development Fund for the childcare provider community. The Safety Net Program offers child day-care services to low-income families. Families can choose which program to enroll their children. Children can be enrolled in the program from six weeks to 12 years old.

Roxie Nestlerode, program administrator at CDFC, said she hoped the walk could become an annual event.

"We do hope that people come out," Nestlerode said.

Walkers can enter individually or on teams of four. T-shirts will be given out and tickets for entry in a charity drawing. Registration forms can be picked up at the CDFC at 2565 Park Center Blvd.

"It's not about how far you can walk — you can just register and walk as much or little as you like," Nestlerode said.

The walk is in conjunction with the fourth annual "Children's Day at the Park" is being held by the Stand For Children Chapter of State College. Information booths about helping children will be there and activities and entertainment will be provided.

This is the first time the event will be held on a weekend, due largely to joining forces with the CDFC, said Anne Stokes, president of the Stand For Children chapter in State College. Stokes added she hopes for the continued success of the event.

"It incorporates a lot of community service and gives parents and residents information about local childcare options," Stokes said.

Penn State will also be participating in the event.

Nicole Lobaugh, executive vice-president of the Panhellenic Council, said council delegates present and future, as well as the executive board, will be present at the event.

"It is just another way to let the community know how much we do care about living in State College," Lobaugh said.

Stokes said that it would be in the best interests of both events to be held on the same weekend. Typically "Children's Day at the Park" is held in the first week of April, but Stokes said that a weekend event would give more members of the community a chance to come out.
