Today's University Park forecast
Cloudy

Plenty of sunshine will result today as high pressure dominates over the region. Some clouds will move in tonight and again tomorrow as a disturbance moves toward the state. A shower may also dampen Happy Valley tomorrow. High pressure will once again return to the area for the weekend, bringing brilliant sunshine and a gradual warm-up in temperatures, making it tough for studying.

Weather Highlight

Thunderstorms are not typically thought of when it comes to the weather in Alaska, but on this day in 1978, a strong occluded front from the Gulf of Alaska sparked the first thunderstorm on record for the month of April in Fairbanks. Pea size hail was reported in areas northeast of Fairbanks.
.

Weather Fact

Hail often accompanies thunderstorms, particularly severe storms. Strong currents of rising air in a thunderstorm, known as updrafts, carry water droplets high into the atmosphere above the freezing level. The water freezes as ice, then begins to fall to the ground. Most times, the hail melts before it hits the ground, but large chunks of ice result when it does not.
