The Penn State men's ultimate Frisbee team brought home the sectional title by defeating Pitt-Johnstown, Carnegie Melon and Bucknell in single-elimination play Sunday.
The team started its race for the crown on Saturday where it competed in pool play to determine its seed in the tournament Sunday. Spank, as the men's team is called, defeated Pitt-Johnstown, Dickinson, and Edinboro, but couldn't pull off a win against Bucknell. The loss placed the team in a tougher bracket Sunday.
Bad field conditions continued into Sunday causing the team to have to play in shin-deep water against Pitt-Johnstown. But the team eased through the game, finishing 15-0.
Against Carnegie Melon Penn State got to play on a higher elevated and drier field than they had previously seen all weekend long. Spank eased passed CMU to advance to the finals where it met Bucknell for the second time of the weekend.
After exchanging points up to 5-5, Penn State took the next three goals. Despite coming out strong in the second half, Bucknell couldn't regain the lead and Penn State won sectionals for the first time in a few years.
The win provides the team with a good seed going into regionals, which will take place May 5-6.
