On Tuesday, for the second year in a row, junior setter Jose Quinones was named Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association's Uvaldo Acosta Memorial Player of the Year.
Quinones was joined on the All-EIVA First Team by sophomores Carlos Guerra, and Zeljko Koljesar along with junior John Mills. Sophomore Zach Slenker was named to the EIVA second-team for the first EIVA honor of his college career.
"It says a lot about the team," Quinones said. "That the level of players we have here are high and those are the core of players that will take us to the next level, now we just must put it together."
Quinones set the all-time assists record for Penn State earlier this year and has averaged 12.91 assists per game. He is also second on the team in digs with 170. Quinones realizes that individual accolades are important, but are secondary to the team's success.
"It feels good and its an honor, but it doesn't mean anything unless we win," Quinones said. "I judge myself on wins and losses."
Guerra being named to the team came as no surprise as he led the Lions with 4.56 kills per game this season, and hit .322 on the year. Guerra was also named to the All-EIVA team as a freshman.
"We had a great season, the guys really helped me out," Guerra said. "This is the second time I got this award and I feel honored, but the important thing is the success of the team."
John Mills, in his first season back in Div. I, was named to the team as he hit .484 and led the Lions with 1.14 blocks per game.
"It means a lot. It's a nice award and I'm very honored," Mills said. "But a national title would be a lot nicer."
Sophomore Zach Slenker despite missing a large part of the season due to injury was surprisingly named to the All-EIVA second team giving the Lions five representatives on the All-EIVA teams.
"I was real surprised, I didn't think I'd make it," Slenker said. "But I'd much rather played in those games with the team and not been named All-EIVA."
Zeljko Koljesar was named to his second All-EIVA team and was named to the All-EIVA academic team.
"Individually I think those honors are well deserved," Penn State men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik said. "Collectively you don't get those honors if you don't have a team around you to push you and make each other better."
Quinones has now been named All-EIVA first team for all three of his collegiate seasons. He was also named a third team All-American last season. Quinones has high goals set for himself which is why the awards have come as no surprise to him.
"Honestly I wasn't expecting anything else," the junior setter said. "I knew I would have a pretty good team around me and I knew I would have them around me to take me where I need to go and make me look good."
Quinones and company will attempt to accomplish something on the team level tonight and on Saturday as the Lions attempt to reach the NCAA Championships.
