Letter to the Editor
To unite the student body, protests not the answer

Tuesday's unity march and continuing protests at the HUB indeed show the very honorable resolve of the student body to end racism. But let me ask, do these protests really go to the heart of the problem? How many times have we heard the same slogans and the same cries for change? Simply saying what has already been said is not enough. These protests will not bring change to the true bigots among us. We need real change to occur, not more preaching to those who are already converted. We must seek out the real heart of the problem. Simply protesting serves only to unify those who are already united and anger those who are the true problem. In fact, these protests may even be counterproductive as they only stir up controversy and anger the administration. We must apply our resources to real change.

And, if it is change from the university administration that students desire, then we must not act bullish and demanding. Instead a mutual compromise must be found where the students and university can act together. The university will not look favorably on students relentlessly demanding the impossible without compromise at all. Racism is indeed a problem, but the way in which we students choose to bring about change will determine how the university and the rest of the nation look at Penn State. This is the time for mature negotiation and education, not for angry demands and futile protests.
