Letter to the Editor
All it takes is friendship, open mind to fight racism

On the day of the unity march, I was the victim of racism. Earlier that day, a white male in one of my classes asked me, "When was the last time you washed your hair?" and "Can you speak correct English?" This shocked and offended me. I am sure he would not have asked me such derogatory questions filled with racist stereotypes if I were not a black female. At that point I was feeling so much anger towards white people for their ignorance and cruelty. Then something quite unexpected happened. In another class, a white female approached me and asked, "Would it be OK if I go to the rally with you?' Just when I was feeling such hurt and despair within me, the Lord sent me a sign that there was hope still. I went to the rally with this person, who I had previously spoken to on a casual basis, and I could genuinely see she cared. She didn't understand a lot of the issues we are struggling with, but she wanted to learn and I was happy to share my thoughts with her. Seeing all the beautiful faces of all colors at the rally standing in support of the black students made me believe that there is hope for Penn State yet. All it takes is people like my new friend, who genuinely care enough to learn.
