Letter to the Editor
Devoted environmentalists only want best for Earth
Had Mr. Sturges found time in his busy writing schedule to attend Earth Day's celebration on Sunday, he would have found it a far cry from the eloquent picture he painted of it in Monday's Collegian. To his probable chagrin, there were no smelly savages protesting running water. In actuality, there was a tent filled with talented engineers and environmental innovators showcasing new alternatives, such as living machines, to some of society's most pressing problems. Instead of crazed liberals looking to blow up a GM factory, he would have found creative minds gathered in a laid-back setting to promote reverence for a planet that will eventually survive each and every one of us and our "shining city upon the hill." And that is regardless of our detrimental actions or the amount of wealth we are able to amass in the process. Many of these "environmentalists" he mocks will be responsible for forging new technological ground that respects the habitat our luxurious existences depend upon. These people aren't after bigger, faster or more. They seek only better for our families, the global situation, and the earth itself. It's a sentiment even Adam Smith could admire. In all the "leisure" time and energy Mr. Sturges has procured with his myriad benevolent technologies, it's a shame he didn't even have a spare moment to see Earth Day's tunes, vibe, and hopeful attitude for himself before he blindly bashed it in print.
