I would like to commend the actions of Assata Richards and members of the Black Caucus. They marched to the front of the rally at Old Main, took control of the situation and gained the support of thousands of students within minutes. From that point on the rally became a powerful call for immediate change, something that is long overdue. In a situation where no one really knew what to expect next, Ms. Richards and members of the Black Caucus acted quickly to hold the crowd together. They were the reason so many students stuck around to show their support. I would also like to comment on President Spanier's incredibly disturbing choice to walk away from Lakeisha Wolf. That single action says a lot about the general indifference and inaction that has been displayed by the administration. Finally, I would like to comment on Josh Rea's letter in which he complains about the "white stereotype." How sad. My heart truly goes out to you, Mr. Rea. It must have been tough growing up white and privileged. Whether you come from money or not, you are already privileged in that you've never been discriminated against because of the color of your skin. When you don't get something, you don't have to ask yourself, "Is it because I'm white?" When you're the victim of a crime, it's not any less traumatic, but you don't wonder if this happened to you because you are white. And that is the difference, Mr. Rea, you don't have to wonder if all your shortcomings are because you're white, whereas the victims of hate crimes and racism are constantly wondering.
