Letter to the Editor
Not only one group racist; everyone has prejudices

In these days of enhanced racial tension at Penn State, we must be cautious. We must be careful not to blame one group or one set of groups for racism. The fact is that, sadly, we are all racist to a certain extent. Each of us has engaged in at least a thought of prejudice. Have you ever crossed the street because you assumed that the oncoming group of black teens were gang members, intending to do you harm? Have you ever told an ethnic joke? It is in these acts that we see the complex nature of racism and the difficulty in eliminating it. We are all part of the problem, and if we do not all participate, we will never solve it. To quote Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, "If only there were evil people insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were only necessary to root them out and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every man. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his heart?" I challenge all of us to destroy those pieces of our hearts.
