For the last three years, I have been involved in the Take Back the Night Rally and March.
I would like to first say thank you to all who participated and who helped plan this year's event; it was by far the best I have seen at Penn State.
I also wish to applaud the Interfraternity Council for their support and the lighting they supplied on Fraternity Row.
As we slowly approached, I was in awe of the more than 50 candles that lit the way for us to march through as well as the supporters who came out of their houses to chant with us, "No means No on Fraternity Row!"
Thank you. You are to be commended.
However, this effect was marred as we approached our stop at the bottom of the street and gathered in our circle of support.
I was disgusted and dismayed by the events that followed.
Several brothers from one fraternity came out of their house and chanted, "No means yes, take off your dress!"
I am utterly appalled by these events.
As a member of Panhellenic Council and the president of Lambda Delta Omega, I hope that these individuals are held accountable for their extremely inappropriate actions on this very sacred night.
To those who felt it necessary to attempt to disempower the march, I would like to leave you with this question: With the overwhelming statistics of sexual assault being 1 in 4, do you not believe that your mother, grandmother, sister, girlfriend or friend has not in some way been affected by sexual assault?
I am sure they would be very proud to know you condone such behavior and go that extra step to verbally harass women.
