Letter to the Editor
Fan reaction to protesters shows true colors of PSU

I walked out of Penn State's Blue and White game angry, ashamed and disappointed in my fellow students and Penn State alumni.

Why? It wasn't because it was a bad game. I left before the game began. It was because of the way Penn State fans, students, and alumni reacted to a peaceful protest that began during the singing of the National Anthem.

A small group of students, some black and some white, rushed the field during the Star Spangled Banner to sit on the 50-yard line in a silent and peaceful protest of the way this university handles hate.

Penn State has race issues. That fact cannot be ignored, yet it seems as though the university administration is trying to do just that. The Collegian regularly publishes tension issues in the area, but when do they report on actions taken to prevent these tension incidents?

This group of protesters was out there because of a recent death threat made to a black student. This, among other tension incidents, should be causing uproar among the 40,000 students of Penn State. Yet many fans in the stadium had no idea why the protesters were out there.

In fact, the gentlemen in front of me voiced their concern for the grass on the field instead of for the students who sat on it. I respect those students who rushed the field on Saturday. They found a peaceful way to express their discontent in the way race issues are being handled here.

However, they received no applause. The cheers came when police dragged a protester from the group by his ankles, and led others away in handcuffs.

Penn State is an institution of education. Education is the primary weapon against ignorance. Unless the people of this university reassess their views and take an action against hate, I'm afraid that it will be ignorance that becomes the primary weapon against education.
