Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual Black and Gold Ball with the Miss Black and Gold Pageant Saturday night at the Days Inn Penn State, 240 S. Pugh St. The evening began with five girls competing for the title of Miss Black and Gold. Included in the pageant was a talent competition, a poetry reading and an "African sequence," where competitors modeled traditional African clothing.
The second-runner-up for the pageant was Becky Farmer (junior-theatre arts). First runner-up was Makini Young (junior-operation and information system management), who also won the Performing Arts Award later in the evening. The winner of the Miss Black and Gold title was Yah Wuor (junior-biology), who also won the Miss Congeniality Award.
After the pageant dinner, members of the fraternity and guests took part in dancing, and a few additional awards were given out. Prominent award winners included Alpha Phi Alpha President Brian Wallace, who received the Undergraduate Brother of the Year Award, and Alpha Phi Alpha advisor Mark Fleming, who won the Graduate Brother of the Year Award.
