Letter to the Editor
White students should be included in discussions about racism without the fear of backlash, criticism: Letter 1

I am constantly amazed by the events that unfold on this campus and in The Daily Collegian pertaining to racism. I thought Monday's incident of racism was ridiculous until I read Tuesday's incident. What kind of incident of racism begins with, "I cannot say I have seen a lot of specific events occur"? The lengthy "incident" did not cite one single specific incident of racism. What is going on here? These daily reports are utterly ridiculous. I do not deny the fact that racism exists at Penn State, but if these incidents, out of the 250 that black student leaders compiled, are most worthy of being printed, I question these reports. The biggest incidents of racism that I have read lately in The Daily Collegian came from black student leaders. When the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus came to University Park last week, two "open forums" were advertised. However, these "open forums" were limited to minority students and staff only.

Our Black Caucus handed out fliers addressed to "all students of color." And during one of the meetings, a black member of Educational Equity declined to answer questions from white newspaper reporters saying, "I don't think most white people are particularly good at dealing with race issues." These incidents sure seem racist to me.

It's time for some black student leaders to look in the mirror and realize that maybe their own attitudes are contributing to the problem.
