Alfred Sloan Foundation names research fellow

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation recently named Philip Bevilacqua a 2001 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. Bevilacqua, assistant professor of chemistry in the Eberly College of Science, was awarded one of the 104 fellowships given by the foundation this year.

Bevilacqua and his team of researchers have been studying biophysical approaches in RNA folding, catalysis and structure, with a focus on viral RNAs. The fellowship is awarded to faculty in the United States and Canada who are in the primary stages of their research careers.

It is based on those who have exceptional skills to contribute to the progression of knowledge in chemistry, computers, science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience or physics.

Bevilacqua has a member of the Penn State faculty since 1997 and received the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award in 2000. He received his doctoral degree in chemistry at the University of Rochester in 1993.
