Letter to the Editor
Inappropriate use of the Bible in judgment of George W. Bush: Letter 1
I honestly have no idea whether President Bush is a hypocrite in matters of faith. However, Tim Trader's column bashes Bush for hypocrisy on grounds that are nothing short of ridiculous. The author begins his article by sarcastically attacking the Willard Preacher as well as those who have faith and religion in their lives. From this unsettling discourse, Trader somehow arrives at a criticism of George W. Bush's supposed morality. Criticism in this area is certainly warranted because, as Trader indicated, much of the president's campaign touched on the importance of morality. The way the author does this, however, is baffling. Trader proceeds to quote three Bible verses and explicitly state how President Bush has violated them. The thing is, he does this by citing George W. Bush's opinions on political issues. Trader thinly disguises his own political disagreements on these issues as instances where President Bush has deviated from the morality he has professed to follow. Instead of actually attacking President Bush's hypocrisy, he carelessly inserts his political opinions by loosely relating them to Bible verses. Maybe Trader does this simply because he likes to poke fun at those who profess to be faithful and quote Bible passages to make their point. In any event, this author would do well to tone down his cynicism and pay more attention to making actual, coherent arguments.
