Letter to the Editor
PSU facilities inadequate; expansions are necessary

I was surprised to read Wednesday's editorial about the White Building gym. I find it pathetic that some downtown gyms are considering a lawsuit in response to Penn State's plan to provide a better student gym in the White Building. During my time at Penn State, I was always surprised at the woefully inadequate fitness facilities available for student use, and spent many hours waiting to use them. I have visited several other universities, including Texas A&M, Florida State, LSU, and the University of Texas, that provide multi-million dollar state of the art gyms for student use. It sounds to me like the expanded White Building gym might not even compare to these huge facilities. I think the downtown gyms should count their blessings that Penn State does not provide a gym comparable to those at many state schools. This country was built on capitalism, and if downtown gyms need to improve their services or lower their prices to remain competitive, then that's the price of business. These gyms need to forget about litigation and focus on pleasing their customers.
