ESACT option availability may increase
Everyone may gain honor students' option to swap ESACT classes for flexibility.

Students of the Schreyer Honors College have been taking advantage of a program that other students hope will soon be available to everyone.

As an academic option for schedules that have little flexibility, Schreyer scholars have the opportunity to substitute intramural sport programs for exercise and sport activity classes.

"Honors advisors have the authority to permit substitutions," said Lauri Perman, assistant Dean of the Schreyer Honors College.

Schreyer scholars have always had the option of substituting general education requirements to assist their demanding academic schedules.

Perman said that the option for ESACT substitutions was recently announced publicly. "It has always been an extra option for students but was publicized this spring." They decided to publish it because not enough students were taking advantage of the extra option, she said.

Many students have found that getting into an ESACT class is difficult. The huge demand for the class from students trying to finish graduation requirements has left most with few options. Many times, students are forced to sign up for a class they aren't interested in, simply to meet graduation requirements.

This is a topic that surfaced recently in the recent Undergraduate Student Government election. USG president-elect Justin Zartman focused his attention on making the options Schreyer scholars have available to everyone. "I had heard from other honors students that they were allowed substitutions for ESACT classes," he said.

"We spoke about the ESACT program dragging behind," Zartman continued.

The pilot ESACT program would allow all students to register for a general ESACT class, allowing them to receive credits for attending various recreational sports programs. Since an instructor teaches those classes, students would be monitored for attendance.
