Letter to the Editor
Statement about racism should be reconsidered

I'm responding to Ms. Pawlik's comments in your article, "Racism discussion morphs into debate," which appeared on Tuesday. Ms. Pawlik apparently is unaware of the pervasive white privilege abound here at Penn State and elsewhere. If she and others are able to answer no to any of the following, then she and others might want to reconsider your stance: Do you wonder why members of your race are continuously portrayed as gang members, illiterates, and servants in t.v. and film? Do you watch what you say and how you act around others for fear that your behavior will be construed as a "racial" and/or "sexuality" characteristic? Do others ask you questions about "how your people" feel about a certain issue in the U.S. in your classes here at Penn State? And do you receive threatening e-mails, letters, or verbal abuse based on your race, sexuality, culture, or language?
