Riots can also be positive if used for some purpose
It's great to see so many students rising to the occasion and either defending or condemning the police and our students. I think, however, that many people, including the police and university leaders, have not realized the potential benefits the riots can have if properly utilized. A mob of 4,000 students, while dangerous and just plain scary, is also a source of tons and tons of potential energy, energy that can be put to good use. We have already seen evidence of this energy in the form of mangled street signs, broken lampposts and enough toilet paper to cover the toilet of the stay-puff marshmallow man. The problem with this riot it happened in the wrong place. I constantly see demolition-type construction on campus that could easily be undertaken by a rowdy crowd of 4,000. Streets that need to be ripped up, buildings destroyed to make room for new ones, old street signs torn down, the list goes on and on. So much manpower is wasted on these actions every day, not to mention wasted money paying construction workers to do something that drunken PSU students would gladly do for free! Next time the rugby team wins two in a row, Mr. Spanier, spread the word that this time the riot will be held at the next construction site. Use cheers like, "The Kern Building sucks" and "Down with the street signs" to make sure the right destruction occurs, and there you have it: PSU students get to riot and Penn State saves thousands of dollars! Don't throw out the utility of a riot just because it may seem like a horrible, life-threatening mob. Put to good use, we can be a great public service!
