Sex Cabaret devoid of controversy, problems
University administrators and security guards attended the quiet event.

Let the record note: There was no lewd or lascivious touching at the Safer Sex Cabaret Saturday night.

There was some whipped cream, a few kisses and some words you can't say on television. There were also a few university administrators and security guards keeping watch.

But in comparison to recent sex-related campus events, there was little fuss.

A friendly crowd of more than 100 students gathered to see skits and hear songs about safe sex as part of Pride Week 2001.

In the days leading up to the cabaret, university administrators asked members of the student group Allies to agree to a written commitment before they were allowed to use a room on campus for their event.

The group agreed to stay away from nudity, "lewd or lascivious" touching or sex acts — things that were never part of the plans for the cabaret, organizer Jennifer Dumin said.

One condition limited attendance to people with Penn State ID cards.

In addition to keeping minors out, the ID card rule would have prevented Rep. John Lawless, R-Montgomery, from entering. Lawless attended a student-run Sex Faire in February, taping a video he later played at Penn State's House Appropriations Committee hearing. Lawless wasn't there Saturday.

Students who stayed around afterward to chat with friends seemed to enjoy the show.

"I was expecting God-knows-what. It wasn't bad. We're adults here," said Kellen Harris (freshman-film and video) who watched from the audience.

"I missed the Sex Faire and the Cuntfest," he added. "I decided I'm not going to miss the next big thing in the paper."

The event might have offended anyone with distaste for frank sex talk or show tunes. If these people were present, they watched and left quietly.

One skit was based around an online exchange between two women, one courting the other. The audience laughed at lines such as: "I have eaten more than one boxed lunch at the kitty cat café."

Between skits, a female student walked on stage wearing a bra covered with whipped cream, cherries and chocolate to talk about erotic uses of food.

Cast member Timothy Wilson read a poem about male masturbation, which led up to a few lines describing an orgasm.

Two members of Healthworks, a peer education program from University Health Services, warned the audience about sexually transmitted diseases. They showed the audience the proper way to put on a condom with the help of a fake plastic penis.

The cast closed by singing new lyrics to the tune of "My Favorite Things" that listed favorite things such as: "Orgasmic evenings without fear of babies."

Penn State's Vice Provost for Educational Equity Terrell Jones, Associate Vice Provost Tom Poole and Annemarie Mountz from the Department of Public Information attended the cabaret. They sat in the eighth row, smiled at the jokes, occasionally clapped and left immediately after the last song.

Organizer Dumin called the performance "fabulous."

"It's something that I'd be proud to invite my parents to," she said.
