Men's volleyball looks to continue winning ways against St. Francis

Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 10 Penn State men's volleyball team has played 23 matches this year and is not about to overlook its 24th.

The Nittany Lions (18-5, 11-0 EIVA) have not dropped a match to an unranked team this year, and when the Lions meet up at 7:30 tonight against unranked St. Francis at Rec Hall, they will be looking to continue that trend.

The Red Flash (16-6, 9-1 EIVA Hay) are a Division II school with the majority of their matches against other small schools. They come into tonight's match-up with four straight wins.

"I think we can't afford to overlook teams like this," senior Steve Aird said. "They look forward to playing against Penn State. They get up for ranked teams and we can't let them put a run together."

The Red Flash is a young team, who last year just avoided falling into the Odeneal division. They now sit atop the Hay division and could move into the Tait next year if they can win the Hay division.

"I have seen them play live twice and I think they could easily be the most improved team in all the EIVA," Penn State men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik said. "This is a team that's probably going to pass better than the last few teams we've faced. They like to do different things with hitters, so the block has got to be good."

The Lions will look to build on their strong serving performance against Juniata. The Lions rang up 13 aces against the Eagles with eight of them coming off the hands of sophomore Zeljko Koljesar and Aird.

"I hope I can continue doing it," Koljesar said. "It depends if I can stay focused and execute every time I serve. That's what we have been doing as a team."

With less than a month remaining until the EIVA playoffs, the Lions look to improve as much as they can in that short amount of time.

The blocking game is always a priority of the team, and the players know the overall improvement of the team is stressed match in and match out.

"We can improve on every point in every match," junior Jose Quinones said. "We must play every team like they are the No. 1 team in the nation. We must play to our goal of the national title."
