Letter to the Editor
Racism not just fact of life that should be tolerated
According to Brendan Holloway, racism is simply a fact of life that should be tolerated. Attitudes such as this only exacerbate the current problems. Ignorance and fear drive the attitudes of racism, sexism, and homophobia. If the daily "Racism at Penn State" report changes only one person's behavior and feelings toward race, then its efforts are not in vain. I commend the Collegian for ignoring any pressure to remove this daily feature. However, any views of students changed because of the editorials, conversations, experiences, etc. are solely the result of personal action and awareness, uncontrolled by outsiders. No one can change your own personal values, beliefs, and attitudes; only you can accomplish this. In the Collegian, the information is simply presented. How readers digest and react to columns and articles is left up to them, far from any kind of mind control. Like all social change, fighting racism begins with personal change and branches to other individuals, groups, and communities from there. As the saying goes, "You can't fool all the people all of the time, but if you fool the right ones, then the rest will fall behind." Don't fall behind. Educate yourself on the issues.
