Letter to the Editor
Drag Ball a celebration of Pride Week; do not compare to Hooters: Letter 2
Apparently Mr. West, in his letter to the editor yesterday, thinks that the LGBTA and feminist communities are the only people who have misgivings over the proposed Hooters restaurant. To single out those groups as the opposition to Hooters is plainly wrong. Opposition to the restaurant in State College came from a number of directions, including "hungry, heterosexual males." Suggesting that only the LGBTA community and feminists were against Hooters, and that all straight men wanted to see Hooters here is nothing short of making broad and incorrect generalizations. And Mr. West doesn't stop at generalizations, either. He feels the need to demonize Womyn's Concerns for Sex Faire. I think we should be proud of them for standing up to Rep. Lawless. They were defending every student's right to freedom of expression. That includes you, Mr. West. Without a doubt your letter offended a lot of people, but you were allowed to write it. Additionally, attendance does not equal correctness. Just because the Drag Ball had lower attendance than a Hooters restaurant would does not make it any more or less appropriate. Lots of people participated in KKK rallies. Does that mean that their content was worthwhile or justifiable? I'm glad you're proud to be straight, Mr. West. In spite of that, keep in mind that not all straight men think the same as you, and that it wasn't just the LGBTA or feminist communities who opposed your beloved shrine of hot wings and female objectification.
