Letter to the Editor
Being pro-life Republican not same as being black
I am writing in response to Jason Brolsma's letter regarding the racial issues here at University Park. While I agree that the 250 complaints promotes negativity on this campus instead of unity, I feel that the black community should not be looked down upon for stating that these incidences happened. If someone is attacked and they do not speak out, they remain a victim. Do we not encourage victims to speak out and reclaim their lives? Why is the black community on this campus not allowed to do the same? I found it very appalling that you compared being a conservative Republican with pro-life views to being a minority. Being discriminated because of your race is quite a different thing. For example, most people would not know that you are pro-life unless you say so. But once you are a minority, people can see it. That's why the term is racism; people hate you because of your skin color. While I am so happy that you have "a heart for those students who have been discriminated against," I don't think you have a clue of what these students have gone through. Therefore, I feel that you are speaking out of complete ignorance. Until you walk a day in my shoes, you have no idea what types of disadvantages I have experienced. Sorry to burst your bubble but being a conservative Republican with pro-life views is not equivalent to being an African American. The disadvantages of each are quite different. As for the Collegian printing each of these racial incidences, don't shoot the messenger for it is their job to print issues concerning all students here at Penn State. Maybe next time the Collegian can print an article about the discrimination and hardships felt by those who are conservative Republicans.
