Drag Ball a celebration of Pride Week; do not compare to Hooters
I am writing in response to Greg West's letter, which contrasted Pride Week events with Hooters. I am amazed by the sheer ignorance and thinly veiled homophobia that some people so happily display. Comparing an affirming and thought-provoking event like Pride Week with a crass and demeaning bar is not only offensive, but also ridiculous. The purpose of Pride Week is to establish a positive atmosphere where people can learn more and talk about the issues facing the LGBT community. The purpose of Hooters is to bilk money from those who get a cheap thrill watching women walk around in tight shirts. Comparing the two is a ludicrous idea. Like Mr. West, I agree that there probably are women who would be proud to work at Hooters. I firmly believe that people should be able to express themselves in responsible ways that brings them happiness and contentment. But that people would wish to deny the LGBT community's right to expression with the excuse that there isn't a Hooters around? That is just stupid.
