Accept your responsibility; don't blame riot on police

As I was reading yesterday's paper, I came across an letter by Alex Yurchenko. When I was through, I was so enraged that I instantly jumped on the computer. The main issue surrounding the problems today is the unwillingness to take responsibility for your own actions.

Now, Alex, you insist the borough and the police are solely responsible for a riot-friendly atmosphere, implying that you believe they are either directly or indirectly responsible for Friday night's riot. The reason the borough council and the police are there is to make sure that citizens inhabit an acceptably safe environment.

One job of the police department as a whole is maintaining order. I doubt that an agency committed to keeping our community safe and maintaining the order would in any way promote a "riot-friendly environment." The law prohibiting the sale of alcohol after 2 a.m. has good reasons for its instating. It was so people would go home before dawn to avoid disturbances. And about the right to assemble — do a bit of research and you will see that it says "or the right of the people peaceably to assemble." That's straight out of the book. Was throwing bottles and toilet paper peaceful? My answer, and I'm sure many would agree, is no. Sorry, but those who decided to go to Beaver Canyon and riot took matters into their own hands and made the conscious decision to riot on their own. It's time to take responsibility for your own actions, and grow up a bit.
