Lions beat Juniata in 3-0 sweep

Collegian Staff Writer

Round two: Juniata vs. No. 10 Penn State, the rematch, ended the same way their first match did with the Nittany Lions landing a three-game knockout (30-22, 30-18, 30-21) of the Eagles.

The Lions (18-5, 11-0 EIVA) used their size advantage to overpower Juniata (11-10, 6-7 EIVA). The Eagles have no player on their roster taller than 6-foot-6, while the Lions have four players who stand 6-feet-6 and above.

"Tonight, we just asserted a physical dominance," Penn State men's volleyball coach Mark Pavlik said.

The Lions jumped out to a 15-8 lead at the technical timeout in game one. Juniata would close the gap to 20-15, but a pair of three-point runs in the last 17 points of the game gave the Lions game one.

Juniata kept it close for most of game two, as they trailed just 19-16 at one point.

But the Eagles failed to keep the pressure on the Lions, as they would score only two more points the rest of the game. The Lions service game stepped up, registering five of their 13 match aces in the last 11 points of game two including back-to-back aces to close the game.

"There are not a whole lot of teams out there that Penn State is not serving well against, Division I or at any level," Juniata College head coach Ryan Patton said in a press release. "They served tough tonight, but outside of our serve receiving game, I thought that we played fairly well tonight."

Their lead in game three would get no less than four as they cruised to the deciding 30-21 game three win.

John Mills led the Lions with ten kills on an impressive .715 hitting percentage. Mills led the Lions in blocks with five.

Junior setter Jose Quinones orchestrated the attack for the Lions with 29 assists, adding four digs, and two aces.

Senior Steve Aird and sophomore Zeljko Koljesar each had four aces for the Lions.

"Jose (Quinones) played pretty well and Zach (Slenker) had a big match, he touched a lot of balls," Pavlik said.

Senior Kevin Moore turned in a good all-around performance for the Eagles with 13 assists, five digs, three kills, and three blocks.

The Lions' victory gave them their sixth straight win, while Juniata, ranked second in the latest Division III AVCA Coaches Poll, has now dropped their last two falling under .500 in EIVA Tait play.

Penn State ran its all-time record against Juniata to 18-0.
