Police reacted correctly; officers had to use force
I was reading David Kiellar's letter today and thought, "Are you kidding, Mr. Kiellar?" He blames police for "coming in using force" and claims that if the police would just let it be, the crowd would "die down." Well, Mr. Kiellar, being that you are a sophomore and probably were not here for the first riot in the summer of 1998, let's take a look at what happens when you leave a situation like this alone. As a witness, police were watching and trying to formulate a plan. While this happened, people started a bonfire with a couch in the middle of Beaver Avenue, tore down lampposts, attempted to overturn several cars, threw trashcans at cars driving by, and destroyed several storefronts. I guess compared to oh, say, World War III, this would be considered dying down? My guess is that with each riot that occurs, police response will get tougher, and rightfully so. If 4,000 students were on your front lawn would you just let them "die down," Mr. Kiellar?
