Letter to the Editor
Discrimination affects all, not just black students
As a third-year philosophy student, I am morally concerned about the social relations here at University Park. Most of all, I am disgusted at the recent escalation of racial issues on campus and in the Collegian. While race is a delicate issue and should be discussed in a university setting to prevent active discrimination, it is not an issue that is meant to transcend our lives when acts of racial oppression or discrimination are not actively taking places. I have a heart for those students who have been discriminated against in their lives. However, discrimination and oppression encompasses everyone's lives, not just the African Americans on campus. This is something that the Collegian, the black students who have recently felt compelled to compile 250 complaints, and those who have argued in public that Penn state discriminates against them need to realize. Being a minority in American society includes some types of disadvantages. For example, I am a conservative Republican, and I feel discrimination nearly every week for my pro-life views on abortion. Yet I, unlike the greater part of the black population on campus, do not escalate my minority viewpoint and attempt to indoctrinate those around me on campus.
