Safety should be a priority for school administrators

With the increase of crimes and assaults, perhaps it is time to look at some of the practicalities, which appear to support these crimes, rather than deter them. Many students traverse the campus late in the evening for reasons that are bound by their own discretion. These evening walks are often held in fear or vigilance of the possibilities of offenses.

Are there any reasons why students should not participate in evening activities for fear of the return? The campus, scattered with street lamps, intends to lighten these paths in an effort to discourage attacks and to give comfort to worried walkers. However, the sad truth is that the lights are neglected and bulbs are left to burn out with indifference. It might be suggested that there is need for more lighting and lampposts along not only the roads, but between the buildings as well. The safety and comfort of students should be a high priority to an institution whose main concern is students.

Nevertheless, one realizes the cost of these items and the limited budget of a public university. It does not seem unrealistic to ask for the maintenance of the streetlights already in place. It may be the burnt bulbs are simply an act of neglect or overworking on the behalf of maintenance crews, but to students in fear, the burnt bulbs condone the possibility of crime.
