Letter to the Editor
Forum to discuss the riot necessary and productive

Clearly, as illustrated by the voiced responses to the events of Friday night, there are differing views who is to blame for the riot. I think the name-calling and scapegoating that has begun is problematic in dealing with the situation at hand.

I was particularly shocked by a recent letter to the editor that directly blamed all parents for raising disrespectful children who have no concept of anything of meaning or value and also deemed Penn State students "sore losers." My first response was, "How dare she! She is the one being immature by name calling!"

Many of the criticisms directed at Penn State students in causing the riots has been that the students are immature and need to grow up. I agree.

However, this cannot take place unless the students are allowed to speak for themselves and assume responsibility for any faults they may have committed. To blame parents for raising disrespectful students is quite beside the point.

I suggest we allow the students to suffer any consequences they may deserve and to allow them a forum, in conjunction with the police, to discuss this incident, but more importantly, to discuss preventative measures for any future rioting. Communication is the ultimate means of acting responsible and mature.

Don't blame my parents. Don't blame my immaturity. Address me as a student, as an adult, as a member of the Penn State community in discussing this subject openly.
