Small blaze breaks out at Rec Hall

Collegian Staff Writer

A roof fire at Rec Hall broke out yesterday, but firefighters were able to extinguish the relatively small fire that caused minimal damage.

Alpha Fire Co. and the Boalsburg Fire Department responded to a call from Rec Hall at about noon that said smoke was filling the main gym in the building.

Three engines, two trucks, and one rescue vehicle were dispatched to the building.

People were immediately evacuated.

Tracy Dietrich, assistant fire chief for Alpha Fire Co., said the blaze was small and started on the roof of the building until it was eventually extinguished by a pressurized water extinguisher.

An outside contracting company was working on the roof of the building when they reported to police that a piece of insulation that had caught fire.

Fire alarms were also activated within the building because the smoke was wafted in through the building's ventilation system.

Dietrich said about 30 firefighters were on the scene and removed parts of the roof to contain the fire.

Penn State Police Services Supervisor Clifford Lutz said that there were no injuries.

Lutz also said an investigation is continuing over what exactly caused the fire and that classes in Rec Hall resumed after 1 p.m. yesterday.
